Winter Soulstice Review by Miriama McDonald from The Beat.

Historical Godley Head was the venue on Saturday night 12 June for this year's Winter Soulstice party. Kindly put on by Massive Productions, this year's event marks the sixth year of celebrating this special time in the earth's cycle. With the weather graciously remaining pleasant and the added effect of the flora silhouetted by strategically placed lighting along with large UV lit masks hanging in mobile like fashion from the surrounding trees, this set the scene for over twelve hours worth of outer worldly fun and music. In keeping with the Department of Conservation's sensible safety regulations tickets were limited, thus selling out this annual event.

The festivities began at 9pm and ran through until 11am, the line up for the evening consisting of a number of our talented local DJ/producers. all with an emphasis on original material.

Host of rdu's electronic show 'The Green Room' Dj Glyd kicked the night off with an original set of downbeat tunes to warm up the crowd. This was followed up by Siliconbeat vs Cubensis dropping their blend of house/breaks and club classics. Japanese DJ/Producer, Hide, impressed with a nice set of Jazz and Bass before Live sound system COSM (Certified Organic Sound Machine) took to the stage. COSM consists of Tom Lewis and Hannah Flatman two producers whom met at The Christchurch Jazz School (which seems to produce alot of our local talent) and while studying found a mutual interest in electronica.

They perform with two laptops along with a series of electronic gear and visual aids. A definite highlight of the evening, these two had the crowd dancing up a storm. Next was Selective Therapy with 90 minutes of chunky psy which went down quite nicely. In keeping with the vibe Insomniac was next up with an uplifting set, which included guest vocals from Mea, who is no stranger to these events having regularly played on the outdoor dance party circuit.

As night began to fade to morning, those who were not catching forty winks in the cozy crash tent or otherwise engaged were treated to some jungle from Structure and Jumbo, followed by progressive tribadelic beats from H'Fox and Bad Sam. Organisim followed with a final chillout set, spinning beats no faster than that of the heart, welcoming in the new day and sunrise. Bringing to a close this sublime annual event.

[Ed: Not quite! We just couldn't bring ourselves to stop, so Pooface McGraw (just try keeping him away) hopped on the CDJs and treated the faithful to some *NEW PHATTYZ*. We wound up at about 11am when it was decided that sleep was definitely looking quite good.]

Cheers to all the people who have sent in pictures (we pinched some from resurrection.net.nz too), there are more coming so check back.

There are some more Winter Soulstice pictures on biggie.

You'll be wishing you were somewhere else when the temperatures and snow start to fall.

Official rumours suggest that there is going to be a gathering of tweakers who don't seem to have noticed that it is the Middle of Winter.

Instead of dancing in "night clubs" where it is nice and warm, they have decided to go to one of the coldest places they can find and party there instead. Massive are leading an attack on the sleepy environs of Godley Head.

As usual, this circus refuses to stick to one type of music and will undoubtedly have selected a bunch of "DJs" and "Producers" who play everything from house music to jungle music to whacking two sticks (or their heads) together.

Participation by anyone is encouraged by the organisers, who believe that as long as you come prepared and alcohol-free, nothing can possibly go wrong and whatever happens the sun will rise again. If you still want to risk this adventure, the shenanigans are expected to begin at around 8pm on Saturday 12 June. Preparatory music and relaxation is provided during the early evening courtesy of Massive Sound System, to begin a night of not-so-relaxing activities. It is not known exactly how long the party will continue. The last set is scheduled for 7am but these things have a tendency to continue long past their bedtimes.

Although Massive's proven Outdoor Anti-Crowding Systemtm is featuring, this party is about more than just music; warm sheltered areas will be provided (a tent with heaters).

To get there, drive to Sumner and head up the valley and hill to the top. Turn left and head 6kms along Evans Pass Road. Look out for Soulstice signs. Drive carefully as the road is narrow, and there are a few cows that don't know the road rules....
