Zoo takes no butts approach to smoking chimp

A South African zoo is trying to persuade its star chimpanzee to kick a smoking habit.

Charlie, a grown male chimp and the Bloemfontein Zoo, has been picking up cigarettes thrown to him by visitors and smoking them - a habit he probably picked up by observing humans, zoo officials told the SAPA news agency on Thursday.

"Baby chimps pick up habits by mimicking adults and we think he started mimicking smokers at his enclosure, which probably led to smokers throwing him cigarettes," spokesman Daryl Barnes told SAPA.

Mr Barnes said Charlie was already showing the signs of a true nicotine addict.

"He even acts like a naughty schoolboy by hiding the cigarette when staff approach the area," Mr Barnes said, adding that the zoo was determined to help him quit.

Mr Barnes said the most important thing was that people stop providing Charlie with cigarettes or any other treats, noting the chimp already had three bad teeth because of all the cans of sweet soft drinks that people throw at him.

Charlie is not the only smoking chimpanzee.

A zoo in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou reported last year that one of its chimps had taken up smoking and was desperately cadging cigarette butts off visitors.

Blind man bites dog

LONDON (Reuters) - A blind man has been arrested in Scotland after witnesses reported he sank his teeth into his guide dog and kicked her across the road, police have said.

The incident allegedly occurred outside a busy shopping centre in Edinburgh.

David Todd, 34, is expected to face charges of cruelty to animals and breach of the peace.

A police spokeswoman said on Thursday the eight-year-old dog had been handed over to a charity dedicated to guide dogs.

"When we took her into custody. She had no apparent injuries," she added.

Todd is due to appear in court at a later date.

Low riders banned in US

US politicians sick of seeing too much underwear on show have banned low-slung trousers to make kids cover up.

The Virginia state house voted to fine kids who showed too much of their pants $50 for "coarsening" society.

Delegate Lionell Spruill called the law "foolish" and asked politicians to remember their own fashion mistakes, like silly hair-cuts and shell suits.

But Delegate John Reid was in favour of the bill. He said: "Underwear is called underwear for a reason."

Summer Soulstice:

We have now passed the two weeks to go mark and we are getting geared up for a fancy shmancy event of Soul Smoothing proportions. We're back in Little River again this year, since it's such a nice place with such nice folks who are good to us. Just take a look at the pictures of the site and you will see what I mean. It's beauuutiful and, oh the serenity...

Well the only thing we like better than serenity is the thud of a fat outdoor sound system on full throttle. That's what you're gonna get, in 2 zones, and with no walls to reflect sound waves, you will hear each piece of music just once with the special clarity that you only get outdoors. But it's not just about sound, we have eye candy too, lighting and visuals in that special way that only Massive knows how.

In the event of poor weather, the party goes ahead and shelter is provided, as always. There will be stalls selling food, drink and party toys. Bring your togs, sunscreen and sunnies, there is a river and we plan to go well into Sunday.

We have been lucky enough this year to work with the crew from Bass*Adix who have hooked us up a tidy [drum'n'bass, jungle, breaks] line-up for (that) zone. (This) zone features some regulars and some special guests, and more than enough [breaks, trance, prog, house, tribadelic, psy] to entertain the discerning Christchurch music lovers.

Gates open at 8pm, tickets are $20, available from Shambala Hair Design, Cosmic Corner and the Little River Store. A booking fee ($1) will apply at some ticket outlets. Gate sales will be available on the night for $30.

Please no dogs, no glass yadda yada.. and leave your alcohol at home and save us the trouble of drinking it for you. Cheers!

Remember Massive loves you because you make the parties as good as they are.

Wooooo Summer is here!!!
