Mysterious D

DJ/Producer - Chch

real name: Damien

Damien Bimler (a.k.a. Mysterious D) began dj’ing towards the end of 1996, originally for nothing more than interest and to gain a greater understanding of what was actually going on ‘up there’ in the dj-booth. After playing at some small events and private parties and for friends around that time, Damien began to think more about becoming an established dj, but was initially put off by the fact that at that time "everyone wanted to be a dj".

In 1998, Damien began learning about the skills of production, and a little later began working with his brother (Confucius) making drum’n’bass. In 1999 the pair produced the track "Maceo remix" with long time friend RQ. (the original track "Maceo" appears on Confucius’s self titled debut e.p.). "Maceo Remix" went on to receive a nomination for ‘best unreleased song’ at the 2000 b-net awards, and is featured on the Confucius Album "In the Seventh House" along with another Mysterious D produced track "Rollcall". In mid 2000, Mysterious D and Confucius produced a remix of "Rollcall" with the obvious name "Rollcall remix". This track was granted funding by ‘NZ on air’ to have video made which was filmed over the summer of 2000/01 and released to co-inside with the release of the pairs first full duo album, "Project Mysteco" in mid 2001.

Since the release of "Project Mysteco" Damien has been working with his brother, relentlessly touring New Zealand and producing an endless stream of tracks for further releases.

Placing a great deal of importance on the actual act of dj’ing and performing (incorporating scratching and other ‘hiphop’ styled turntable skills) Mysterious D and Confucius have gained a reputable following among the Aotearoa massive. This was reinforced in 2003 when Damien placed 1st in the drum’n’bass division of ‘Decknology’ and went on to place 2nd overall.

With an increasing amount of solo productions, the impending release of the next Confucius & Mysterious D album and the possible release of a 12" or two, 2004 promises to be another rewarding year for Mysterious D.
