real name: Micah Wolfe
Stray Theories is the ambient electronica project of Australian musician Micah D Wolfe. After many years of working as a saxophonist with various funk, soul, jazz & cover bands throughout Australia, he began producing electronic music in 2000.
His music is inspired heavily by ambient music artists such as Brian Eno, Stars Of The Lid, Boards Of Canada, Aphex Twin & The Album Leaf.
Over time the Stray Theories sound has evolved, blending elements of minimal ambient & chillout music, with touches of deep progressive electronica, nu-jazz and lush cinematic soundscapes. The past few years have seen several independent EP releases which have received excellent reviews, "a chilled mix of electro lounge sounds", "ethereal soundscapes and deep meditative ambience".
The sounds of Stray Theories have appeared worldwide on various compilations, documentaries, short films, as well as being featured on many radio shows, film and multimedia projects.
In 2007 & 2008, Stray Theories was a key performer at the Sydney Riverbeats Festival (Parramatta) - "A unique signature event is an innovative and inspirational celebration of water and our relationship to it". Stray Theories composed & performed both years for the event in collaboration with Brooklyn-based digital artist/animator Motomichi Nakamura.
Stray Theories has also performed at various other festivals & outdoor parties, including Canaan Downs Festival, Voyage, Autumn Equinox & Mystic Forest, as well as tours of the South Island of New Zealand with many other electronic music artists.
Currently based in New Zealand, Micah has been busy producing & performing downtempo electronica as Stray Theories, as well as regularly performing and collaborating with many other artists/projects, playing sax & keyboards in bands from just about every style - from jazz, funk, soul and rock to drum & bass and experimental electronica.
A new Stray Theories album is due to be completed mid 2010.
